Question:
I HAD AN ABNORMAL PAP LAST YEAR IN JULY 02 AND NEVER WENT BACK FOR FOLLOWUP. I GOT PREGNANT IN DECEMBER AND GOT ANOTHER PAP DONE. IT CAME OUT NORMAL. I HAD MY BABY IN SEPTEMBER. I RECENTLY GOT ANOTHER PAP DONE IN DECEMBER AND IT CAME OUT ABNORMAL SAYING I HAVE THE GENITAL WART VIRUS AND THE ONE CAN CAUSE CANCER. SHOULD I BE WORRIED ABOUT MY SON HAVING THE VIRUS AND MY BOYFRIEND THAT IVE BEEN WITH FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. WEVE HAD UNPROTECTED SEX?

You cannot tell if you have HPV from an abnormal pap smear. What an abnormal pap means is there are abnormal precancerous cells.
My X is currently on her 3rd diagnostic procedure, a colposcopy, after 3 years of multiple abnormal paps.
The second procedure was a scraping of tissue "thin prep" in which they found actual HPV cells.
No-one knows for sure when you are infectious and when you are not. Unfortunately without symtoms or pathology there are no conclusive diagnostic tests for men with HPV.

Your baby is most likely fine. In rare cases, the virus is in the mouth. You can tell if your baby has asthma like symtoms, which will fade as they grow older. If you have the kind of HPV that causes cancer, you shouldn''t over worry yourself with it. Just make sure you have your papsmears done yearly from now on, and don't ignore an abnormal pap smear. The virus causes cancer in stages and there is no reason for a girl to ever die from this as long as she sees her gyno regularly. As for your partner, he may one day notice warts on his penis. Although your have a risk of cervical cancer, he has no risk of getting penile cancer. I know all this because I have HPV myself. I had my first laser surgery for cancer when I was 19. I believe I was an HPV baby, because I too had asthma as a baby. My husband also has it, but he knows he will not get cancer and is very understanding.

Most likely your baby is fine. Doctors say there is a very very low percent that a baby could contract HPV from its mother. If they did it would be found in their mouth. Just talk with your doctor about this, but mostly likely your baby is 100% fine. Your boyfriend probably does have HPV. Usually people do not show any signs of HPV such as warts, so most likely he does have it.
