Question:
My brother has been recently diagnosed with genital warts (HPV) on his mouth (lips). I drank out of a cup of his without washing it first and smoked two cigarettes with him while the warts were visable. Does this mean I probably will catch it?
?

You probably didn''t catch it but it isn't impossible. My concern it that he should NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT, be smoking if he has oral HPV. It is very risky and can greatly increase his risk of getting oral cancer.

The mouth is a pretty harsh environment and it isn''t very common to transfer them this way.
I wouldn't reccomend it in the future, however I dont think you have much to worry about.

I would avoid this (why risk it?), but oral HPV is very rare. It is typically found in those with a severely depressed immune system, such as those suffering from AIDS.

I too think you are probably safe. It is important to know though that HPV is a virus and as such, even if the warts are not visible, it is still possible to pass the virus. This is also true with herpes which is also caused by HPV. I doubt that you will get it though from drinking from his glass or sharing his cigs.

To whoever just said that hpv also causes herpes:NO IT DOESN"T. Herpes is called HSV.Not HPV.

I''m confused how someone has genital warts on their lips. There are 100 strains of the HPV. All warts are not genital warts. They are contagious though. Just touching one and then touching another area on your body can spread a wart. Not sure if the trasmission route via a glass and a cigarette would be sufficient to infect you. Only time will tell. But I wouldnt worry about it.
