Question:

How long does it take for genital warts to show up?

I must have contracted it 13 years ago but it remained dormant for that long. I developed symptoms recently because of pregnancy.

Can it take 5+ years to show up? I''ve only been unfaithful once...& it was almost 6 years ago. I was just diagnosed. Can it really take that long?

I have been married for 23 years, and now I have hpv...hmmmm. I asked my spouse what the deal was, and that I am very mad that I have it. He travels around the world alot and swears that he has been faithful. I was a virgin when we got married. I am so mad, because the doctor says it is no proof of infadelity but could have been dormant for years. And now he has some genital warts that have appeared. I had my biobsy done immediately after they told me I had HPV and the acid treatment. Too many emotions running in my head right now. Don''t know what to believe.

I contracted this three years ago and I wouldn''t have known if it weren't for my pap smear. Since I found out I had it, I've only had three warts show up and never anything I would worry about if I didn't know I had this STD. In my case and on my body they just look like an ingrown hair. Nothing too big. So it's always safe to know for sure if you have it. Make sure you get your regular paps. This is nothing to mess around with. Since finding out I had this STD I have had cancerous cells show up on my cervix. I have had to have shots in my vagina to numb it so I could have many procedures done to get rid of the cancerous cells. I have had my cervix frozen to try and get rid of the cells, I've had it burnt, to try and get rid of them, I've had it cut and a few other things done. It's nothing to mess with. It hurts terribly and it makes me feel degraded and dirty. So please....PLEASE use condoms...so you dont have to go through what I've been through.

From 3 weeks to several years. You can have the virus and never show symptoms. Likewise, if your immune system is compromised you may notice an occurence or more frequent occurence.

I had sex with my boyfriend, but before we got together I had 2 other partners, but the day after I had anal sex with my bf I was still sore and itchy, so I checked myself and saw warts inside my anus. Im really scared and dont know what to do. I dont know if it was him or my 2 other partners that gave it to me. He''s coming back to town tonight and I'm going to let him know about the situation. Can anal warts be treatable?

well there are two types of HPV. one that causes warts that is visible. and the other that can cause cervical cancer in woman.this one has no symptoms. the only way to find out is to have a pap smear

Usually within 3-8 months after contact. But some people never develop warts, but still pass the virus onto others

I contracted the virus between ages 12-15, and no warts showed up until I was 18 years old. Some people never get the warts, and some people it takes years and years to develop.

I would also like to add that there are two ways hpv can show up. There are the strains that cause genital warts, the ones you can see. And there are the strains that can cause cervical cancer: this form of hpv does not cause genital warts, and can only be detected through a pap-smear. That is why it is so important to get your pap-smears. If caught early enough the precancerous cells that hpv causes, can be taken care of very easily. If left untreated, these precancerous cells will turn cancerous and you will develop cervical cancer.

I contracted HPV when I was 16 and it was dormant until I was 18, which I thought was a long time but compared to some others I suppose its not!

I just went to a Planned Parenthood clinic yesterday, as I was concerned I might have hpv. I was told it takes between 1-8 months for the warts to show up. They also told me that because I had not showed any signs of warts in this time frame they were almost positive that I had not contracted the virus.

I had sex once, a year ago, with someone who told me after-the-fact that they had hpv. He had not had a wart in over 3 years, and he pulled out prior to ejaculating.

I never knew there was a thing called hpv and I''m 30 years old. If you are going to have sex please, please, please everyone use a condom! Just because you can't see something doesn't mean it's not there! And if you do have hpv continue using condoms. You can develop more warts from not using one, and become infected with a different strain of hpv.

Protect yourself,

I was diagnosed with HPV ( the pre-cancerous cell kind) a couple weeks ago during my pap. I hadn''t had a pap in two years, and they are contemplating doing a LEEP. My doc is waiting on my biopsy results, but is confidant I'm in the mild-moderate range of precancerous cell development. The thing is, mine has most likely been dormant for years, so it's hard to tell when I got it. As far as the vaccinations go, according to my doc and the cacer society's site, vaccinations will NOT INCREASE your chances of developing cervical cancer, but rather protect you from strains that you DON'T have. Remember, they aren't 100% effective, but they are at least something. Again, I repeat, they DON'T increase your chances of developing cancer.

I contracted it in 1996 and as of 1999 I have had 3 paps - all are clear, so note that with a healthy diet and lifestyle it is possible for this to work its way out of your system!

Please people note that this is a skin to skin contracted desiese and can NOT be stopped by using a condom, not that I advocate unsafe sex, just need you all to know that it is NOT 100% no matter how you slice it, know your partner(s) - get tested (women get your pap-smears and men, check yourself out as there is no test for men, and the only tell tail sign is the visable warts) also limit your partners!!!

My doctor told me there is 19+ strains - only 2 are detected in women during a pap and no tests are available for men! I also hear there is a new vaccine for men and women under 27yo. I have no info on this but will after my visit to PPGG on monday!

Stay healthy!

I CONTRACTED HPV WHEN I WAS 17. IT SHOWED UP SEVERAL MONTHS LATER-SMALL BUMPS. WHEN I WAS 21 I MET MY CURRENT BOYFRIEND WE HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR ALMOST 10 YRS. HOWEVER HE HAS HAD NO SIGNS OF IT.

I had no signs and no symptoms of HPV at all and neither has my husband.

Before my husband and I got together I was free and clear (or so I was told) we know that there''''s a 95% chance that the HPV came from his ex because she also passed chlamydia to us(even though that''s gone now) but my doctor said that it is possible that the HPV was dormant when I first contracted it.

So I could have contracted it 2 years ago. I had no outbreaks ever and I just had a papsmear 4 weeks ago. However I went to the doctor today for another pap and he told me I had a little bump that looked like it could be HPV so he took a skin sample and is running tests on it.

there are over 70 different strains...

it doesnt matter whether you use a condom or not...you still have %75 chance of getting it because it is skin to skin contact...

i have them inside, and perianal. they can appear ANYWHERE...including under the breasts, armpits, and around the eye. Anywhere. Anal canal and all.

They have a vaccine now that will prevent HPV, but you CANNOT use it if you already have HPV because it increases your risk of getting cervical cancer.

this is some Genital Warts indeed!

HPV can hid for many years before it rears it''s ugly head!

Cancer from HPV can take many years to develop. I have been married to a man infected with hpv since I met him. We have been married for 18 years. At first I didn't know the warts was a STD disease, since I never heard about hpv.

Well I noticed about 6 months ago, while doing self examination of myself and constant bleeding that I had bumps and pimple like things on my cervix. Now I got concerned, cause I know what this means and now it's time for the fight of my life.

I have no insurance and was really worried about my health and how much longer I have to live.

after careful research I have found a herb called pau D' Arco. I take massive doses of this herb daily. And as long as I continue to take this herb, the bumps and pimple like thingy's go away and stay away. the bleeding stopped. but as soon as I stop taking the herb, it comes back with a vengence. So it looks as if I will have to take this herb for the rest of my life to keep the bumps away.

please everyone, educate yourself! Don't be stupid and condoms don't always protect you! and it only takes 1 time to contract this disease. and once you have it, you will never get rid of it.

I broke up with my girlfriend of 2 years and then warts appeared. It was 3 years ago (a year before I met my ex) that I slept with my previous partner.
Doctors explain that the virus CAN have lied dormant for that long and stress, anxiety and starting to smoke again have given me a low immune system which has let the symptoms of the virus show up.
I''''d love to be able to say my ex passed it on to me but the truth is she may not have done. I''ll never know.
One thing I had to consider is that far more than ever before I was emotionally distressed at the break-up, was eating badly and drinking more and hadn''t smoked for years until the relationship started to nose dive so I''ve not done myself any favours.
I''m told the virus can work its own way out of the body but that could be years or never so keep checking for new growths. And eat a good diet, drink less, don''t smoke and use a condom always. And you MUST tell any future partners that you may be carrying the virus and quite frankly everyone should get a full STI check-up before starting a new sexual relationship!! Don''t be ashamed of it - 80% of people at some point will have the virus. Just be aware of it!!!!

I always wear condoms... but I still contracted genital warts through contact with my partner''''s testicles even though he showed no signs of it :( it''s no fun/embarrassing, but they say genital warts causing HPV is less dangerous than cancer causing.
