I certainly feel for anyone suffering fro RRP.

However, it is rare. And to the poster who put up the report stating 100,000 people worldwide may have persisting infections, that is a very large number, but when you do the math that means that 100,000 out of 6,379,157,361 people worldwide has it. That''s 1 in 63,791. That is the definition of rare. Added to that is the fact that all HPV's are immuno dependent so the assumption is that lesser developed countries would have a higher incidence rate (as they do with cervical cancer).

Which is not to say it isn't very REAL and very terrible to deal with as I'm sure it is. There is certainly a risk of spreading it to the mount and to the throat. However given the above numbers it is rare.

Also, it's estimated that 75% of all sexually active people have been exposed to the virus. 75% of 6,379,157,361 is about 4MILLION people. Given the prevalance of oral sex, chances are that these people's mouths came in contact with the very area that their genital did and yet they only developed genital lesions. This empiraclly suggests that transmission to the mouth or throat is much less likely.

There ARE real risks and no one knows why some people are more likely than others to develop mouth or throat lesions so everyone should certianly be careful.

is it possible to get them them in your mouth with out your mouth ever coming into direct contact with and infected person? (so like if I touched it with my hand and then touched my mouth or something)

RRP is real. RRP is really rare. About 5% of people have HPV in the mouth. About 1-5 people per million of those with it in their mouths develop RRP. Yea, one in a million is the low estimate, 5 is the high...

Usually quite similiar to warts appearing on genitals.

Generally whitish colored cauliflower like bumps.

Here are a few pictures I found on the web - Keep in mind these pictures are of HIV/AIDS patients with severely compromised immune function.

Genital wart in mouth
Genital Wart on lower lip

I reccomend seeing a dermatologist for the an accurate diagnosis.

Hope this helps, more pictures are available at:

I Am A RRP Patient...don''t fool yourself...it may not be as rare as you would like to think.....My doctor has many patients with rrp...Another local doctor has over 200 patient & this is with a 20 mile radius of each other:

Human Papilloma virus Infection Of Oral, Respiratory And Ocular Mucosa

InfectionOral,Respiratory,Ocula Mucosa

Research Reports
HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS INFECTION OF ORAL, RESPIRATORY AND OCULAR MUCOSA.

Thomas Broker, Ph.D

Despite the general belief within the medical and scientific communities that laryngeal papillomatosis is very rare leg. involving a few hundred people), initial surveys I have conducted are revealing that many thousands of patients are seen nationwide at intervals ranging from biweekly to annually. I have heard anecdotal suggestions by certain dentists of the increasing frequency of oral warts, but suspect most dentists do not recollect or perhaps even recognize the vast majority of cases. One informed clinician estimated half of all children with JLP in under-developed socio-economic environments die of respiratory blockage, most without diagnosis. More adults than children are affected with RRP, but with much less severity and frequency of intervention. While purely a guess in the absence of systematic sampling, there may be well over 100,000 persistent (or terminal) cases of JLP/RRP worldwide.

Here are all of the pictures I have found on the internet of oral warts and/or oral HPV. I hope they help answer some of your questions. Remember, there are many “normal” bumps in the oral cavity, but paranoia can really take a toll on you if you don’t know what you’re looking at. Just hi-lite one address at a time and copy and paste it into your web address box. If you have any questions or if you would like to email me please do not hesitate. I will help as much as I can, and I will be glad to do it. My email address is eternaldevotion1@aol.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

It is unfortunate that the others whom replied to the message are suffering from RRP. It is a terrible condition and very difficult to treat. But! It IS extremely rare. And the likelihood of contracting it isn''t very high. At least that is what my DOCTOR told me. So... if you have HPV please don't think that it means you'll never be able to enjoy oral sex with a partner again... because this simply ISN'T true.

Again... my sympathies for anyone suffering from RRP. But please do not needlessly frighten others into believing that they're lives and ability to enjoy oral sex ever again is over. because that's an exaggeration and UNTRUE.

No but don''t even think about having oral sex with anyone with the virus don't let anyone give you oral if you have the virus, any stain. Don't be stupid like me. I have RRP and it is not nice. It is also fatal if the warts spread to your lungs. Your lucky if you only have genital warts. I guess that's how life is. You don't know what you have until it's gone. Please don't listen to this "RARE" crap everyone is talking about with 'throat warts' scientifically known as Recurrent Respiratory papilloma.
please don't have oral sex.

and again. all of this "not common" crap is for people who knows nothing of RRP. I am telling you from REAL LIFE, not from F!@king research.
It may be true that only 2 or 3 types cause RRP but the other srains may cause cancer in the throat. There is no need for me to explain everything to you, if you know you have the virus or the other person may have it, please I repeat..please don''t let anyones genital area come close to anyones mouth area.
My lady also has RRP because of me so I have a lot more to deal with. If you have it please don't kiss anyone on the lips you 'WILL' spread it to them. To hell with all this possible crap. don't be stupid. F all the 'maybe's'. F all the 'not common'. F all the 'rare'. When doctors say the word 'rare' to some people that means it may not be possible to transmit to others. So plesae don't listen to that crap. I'm telling you now. So don't say no one told you so.

IF YOU HAVE WARTS ON YOUR TONGUE- READ THIS!!!!!

Well, for warts on your tongue(i have some there)..if anyone has this. I know the right treatment for it, you can buy it at the store!!!!! Believe it or not The Freeze Away Wart treatment by Dr. Scholls works!!!! I used it twice under my tongue, for two days, one time each day, before I go to bed. And they are almost completely cleared!! I can''t believe it, I am so happy!!! It does say on the box not to use it on mucous membranes, but it is Sylilic acid- the same thing the Doctor uses. It costs around $20 bucks, but it's so worth it! Just be careful at first, read the directions, and dab on lightly to see how your skin reacts with it, then once you know, you'll be able to figure out how many seconds to hold the Q-tip thingy on it for. It does sting and burn, but it's a nice stinging burn, you can tell right off the bat that it's killing the warts. I'd say use it in two day intervals.
I know it can sound ridiculous but it was something I was thinking of trying- because logically why WOULDN'T it work?!!!

I have NOT however used it in the genital area..for there I use Tee Tree Oil, and it IS working GREAT!!!! At first it does burn- first night that is. I soaked some gauze and slept with it over night, then dapped some on the next few nights..I can see and tell it's working!!!! You can buy all this stuff at a Walmart or a Target!

I think that they look like bumps in the mouth and they have white stuff around then and they may start to hurt alittle bit after a while.

"""This empiraclly suggests that transmission to the mouth or throat is much less likely."""

This statement is untrue. LIJ Hospital researchers have proven that Many, Many, Many people have HPV present in their throats, but not everyone with hpv in their throat will develop rrp. HPV has been linked to oral, throat and lung cancers, as well as cervical, penile and anal cancers.

This is a VERY serious issue. If you are having oral sex with someone with hpv, don''t assume you will be immune. HPV can be present without initial symptoms and can lay dormant for many years.

they could like diffrent in alot of diffrent places like the male part it either can look like bups around the penis or it also could be red spots they go away and then come back two or longer after they go away but they also can have a white color around the red spots and you are always scratching your self. For a women you can get then inside you and you would never know because you cant see them but it is the same a a mans but woman need to get a pep done to see if it can lead into cancer cells but you also can be treated but they will always come back and you can spread then to your partner so it is best to tell him or her and if they want to be with you then use condoms so that if they dont have it then they won''t get it either. I feel that if you know you have it and dont tell the person you are with that you have it that it is wrong because then that person has it for the rest of there lives and they also can pass it on to the next person they they sleep with.
