Question:

If you have HPV but don''t have symptoms, will it show up on a papsmear?

There are different types of HPV. Some are high-risk types - the type that can be detected on a pap smear. Search the site for ''dysplasia' for more information. Good luck!

yes, there''s a kind of HPV that causes abnormal cell growth on the cervix, but does not cause genitcal warts. You wouldn't have any symptoms (i.e. see anything or feel anything ) from these abnormal cell growths, but a papsmear would catch them.

yes it will definitely show up.I have never had symptoms still to this day.

YES!! GET TESTED!!!!!!!

It will only show up on the pap smear if you have dysplasia (abnormal cell growth). If you do then your culture of tissue is also tested for hpv. HPV is usually the cause of dysplasia 95% of the time.

yes, a pap smear will reveal the abnormal cells and then the pap will be tested for hpv using the dna of the cells. if dna is positive for hpv it is strongly encouraged to see an ob/gyn for a colposcopy and go to every follow up he assigns

Yes, it will show up. I just got my pap back on Monday and I have HPV. I had to go in today for a biopsy cause I am a high risk.

no it won''t always show up on a papsmear. Sometimes it takes a while for the cells to become abnormal. The best thing to do it get a colscopy, that is how I found out i had it after the papsmears came back ok.

...Personally, I never showed any signs of HPV until i got a papsmear and my doctor told me i had abnormal cells...caused by HPV

Yes, it may. I never have had any symptoms until my last pap test. The test came back with abmormal cells and I was diagnosed with high grade dysplasia. I will be having the LEEP procedure to remove the abnormal cells. That is why it is important to have a yearly pap and to ask to be tested for hpv if you think you have been exposed because hpv is not tested along with other stds. The hpv test is done seperatly, apon request or if you are a woman over the age of 30. Hope this helps.

No. My first pap showed abnormal skin cells that turned out to be from a light case of HPV. I had the skin in my cervix freezed off in hopes of getting the infected skin cells off. Its been 2 1/2 yrs since that and all of my paps since then, 5, have all come out normal. What can happen is that you still have the virus but your body builds an immunity so that you stop breaking out or it just remains dormant and can do so for yrs. I know that a preventive program I do is go twice a yr for a pap to check for reoccurences for 5yrs after treatment. Keep in mind this is for a mild case though. You''ll have it forever though. Whats debatable and still being tested is whether or not its still transferable after building an immunity and if so then to what degree.

I was told I had HPV from the results of a pap. I had a colposcopy, and came back every 6 months for another pap. My last one came back perfectly normal, and my gyno told me that basically ALL people will have HPV at one point in their lives. It is the same virus that causes genital warts but for most people it is a more mild form and your body will eventually recover itself.

I have absolutely no symptoms and my papsmear came back abnormal. They said I have HPV and are going to do the DNA test to determine how deep into my cervix the infection goes. I am 13 weeks pregnant.

yes, and the dr will want to have another pap in 6 months, not a year. Also, the dr may suggest to freeze that area.

Yes I had my first pap smear and the results came back abnormal and positive for Hpv at high risk! I still have no symptoms and I still need to get the copolcopy done to determine a more accurate diognose of it! I hope Im ok! Hpv is as common as the common cold anyone could have it! If i were you Id get checked!

you might not have external symptons but you may have internal symptoms, which your pap can detect if your test comes back abnormal. you may also have internal warts, which the doctor should see during your exam. your pap may also show up normal for years after being infected. thats why this disease so popular (about 3 out of 4 people have it, and most do not even know it because they don''t show any symptoms.) if your really worried, ask for an hpv test during your next papsmear.

there must be warts on the cervix in order for a pap to come back abnormal.

I had my first pap smear and learned I have HPV with no symptoms.

I don''t know a whole lot about this, but hpv is one of the major causes of cervical dysplasia (abnormal cells), which is found with a pap smear, then a colposcopy and biopsy. I was diagnosed with cervical dysplasia about 6 months ago, I didn't and still don't have any other signs of HPV. Hope that helps.

4/20/2006

!

Yes deffinatly, most of the time, just make sure that the test is going to check for that.

5/2/2006

!

even if you don''t show any symptoms of hpv you could still have an abnormal papsmear that would like show that you have displasia

3/20/2006

!

on the papsmear, it''ll show up as "abnormal cell growth".. but not necessarily hpv. you have to get a special hpv test for that.

7/28/2004

Yes it will show up in your DNA from a papsmear. It is not in the Genital Warts.

11/18/2004

!

yes

11/28/2004

!

The answer to that is yes, and that''s how I found out that I had HPV. I was going to my annual gyno appointment, and my pap smear came up abnormal and that it was caused by HPV. There may be a good possibility that it may be caused by cervical dysplasia, which you can research on the internet or go to your doctor for more information. No need to worry, just as long as you take care of yourself and practice stress managing skills, you will be fine. Make sure that if you do have HPV that you go to your doctor for follow-up care.

Yes, I have never had any symptoms every and still dont but I was told that it ws detected on my last pap, I am praying they are wrong!

2/23/2005

Yes it will show up on a papsmear only if you have abnormal cell changes. This will not say if you have genital warts. You will need to contact your doctor if the test results are abnormal and scheldule to have a colposcopy and or biopsy done. This well look in to you cervix and see the abnormal cell change, and can see warts as well.

I just took a papsmear and found out that I have hpv and mild dysplasia but i have never had any type of symptoms at all. So my guess would be that yes it shows in the papsmear.

Yes. My girlfriend found about HPV from pap smear.

9/18/2003

Yes, I don''t have any exterial warts or symptoms but I was diagnosed with "high risk" hpv during a regular annual. this means that they are on internal not external. I was tested for it once my pap came back abnormal.
