Question:

My doctor advised me that I have genital warts. I had her test for HPV when she did the PAP test and the test for HPV came back negative. Is it possible that she misdiagnosed me. When I put vinegar on these bumps, they did not turn white. Aldara, however, has made them stick out further and my whole vaginal area burns now?

I just wanted to let everyone know that it seems that many people are misdiagnosed! I was told that I had HPV and I was terrified. It was awful and I felt like a terrible person! I used Aldera Cream and had an outrageous reaction. It was terribly painful and lasted about a week. I was scared that I had another STD that I didn''t know about. After seeing 1 nurse practioner, 1 nurse, and 2 dermatologists....I have found out that I'm fine and I am STD free! I have also been tested for every STD under the sun! So...just for the record...definitely get a second opinion...after $150 and terrible misery...I am perfectly normal! And I would also advise going to your local health dept. They are very familiar with STD's and very cheap! Good Luck!

I''m the person who asked this question. It was a general practioner that had diagnosed me during an annual exam. After suffering from the horrible side effects of itching and burning after using ALDARA, for 3 weeks, I decided to consult a gyn for a second opinion. I do NOT genital warts. My genital anatomy is just that way...

The EXACT same thing happened to me!
I went in to a planned parenthood center to inquire about a few small bumps on some scar tissue at underside of my vagina. The nurse there who examined me immediatly diagnosed it as HPV and burned me all over my vagina with some incredibly painful liquid (plus they charged me a ton and billed me under someone else''s name!!!).
She didn't do a culture or anything. I soaked for days in Genital Wartsy baths. It was sooooo traumatizing and painful. Plus is really hurt my relationship with my bf and our sex life.
Afterward, I couldn't have sex comfortably for months, plus I was so self-conscious because I thought I had HPV.
A few months later I went to my normal doctor for my pap, and she told me those were not HPV (in her opinion) at all and was just funny-shaped scar tissue because I have thin skin and have torn there so many times.
I too have never had a positive pap before or since.

It has now been over a year since that terrible incident, and my skin is FINALLY back to it's former state, however for months after the burning I was raw and more prone to yeast infections and couldn't enjoy sex at all.

I''m (again) the one who asked the question. I have NOW made the decision to ALWAYS spend the extra money and see an ob/gyn for ALL female- related problems and annual exams. (Afer all, that's what the specialize in.) For those who have used Planned Parenthood, I suggest getting a a second opinion from an ob/gyn. When I did and found out that I was misdiagnosed, my Genital Warts pressure went down 20 points, I can laugh again, and I'm now sleeping through the night. Furthermore, I contacted the pharmacy that filled the Aldara presciption and asked that they show a misdiagnosis in my files and sent a letter to the doctor who made the misdiagnosis and requested that she do the same. She has not called me, nor written a letter of apology to me. However, her nurse called and indicated that they received my letter and were putting it in my file.

anyone out there who has been "burned" by Aldara as I have...use neosporin for a week and the broken skin will heal.

Hard to believe but this happened to me too. I was diagnosed with HPV by planned parenthood. The last time I had unprotected sex was 6 years prior to my appointment and so I had my doubts about the accuracy of her diagnosis, but I was so scared that I believed her and didn''t get a second opinion. She told me that I must have had a mild case because normally it would spread in just a few months. It was so hard to tell my boyfriend, luckily he was very good about it. For a year I lived thinking I had this virus, and it really made me feel sad but at my next annual exam, a year later a different doctor at planned parenthood told me that the "warts" were just two tiny pieces of skin, just part of my anatomy. That was almost 10 years ago now and I was lucky my then boyfriend took the news so well, because now we are married!

when I was told i had genital warts i was sent to another clinic where they weren''t sure if i had the virus or not. Then they did some vinegar test and a little spot turned kinda white so they assumed that's what i had. A day later the area started to expand and so they perscribed me Aldara. They said that it could take from 4-16 weeks for the warts to go away if they would at all. Well after like 4 times of using the cream i ended up feeling like something had rubbed against me for hours on end. where "warts" were there started to become holes... or ulcerations. it hurt to walk and move and for some reason there was fluid coming out that would sting and wake me up in the middle of the night. i missed alot of school and have only been with one person who has no symptoms. It hurt when i went to the bathroom cuz it felt like my vagina was being eaten away. when i went back to the doctors a nurse there told me that if i was using the Aldara and it was acting the way it was then it would get alot worse before it started getting any better. finally in 3 weeks my vagina headed back to normal and everything went away pretty fast. the only signs of anythng were 2 scars. 2 weeks later i now am starting to have the symptoms again but i'm afraid to use the Aldara because of what it's did to me.

that''s not hpv. doctors don't know what they are talking about. That is more than likely herpes. the bumps on the inside of my vagina are painless, no puss, no burning, absolutely no pain. hpv is flesh colored and shows up with vinegar then turns white. If it didn't respond to the vinegar than it's something else. Hope you find out

Pap detects precancerous strains of HPV.

There are types of HPV that can be dianosed only by visual examination. It sounds like you have that type.. which is probably less of a hassle than the kind that causes dysplasia.

I''ve heard that before, about warts sticking out.. I think this is normal and will probably subside soon. Let us know in the personal experiences section how things work out for you with Aldara.

Have a good day!

All doctors I have seen told me that I had HPV despite the fact that I''ve never had any warts and have never been tested for the virus. They simply came to this conclusion due to my having cervical dysplasia.

I was just diagnosed yesterday by a practitioner at my college infirmary, and I am going to get a second opinion from an OB/GYN...I''m terrified, I feel like a dirty, horrible person, on the verge of losing all her friends. I'm terrified that if I start something like Aldara, I'll have a horrible reaction and maybe even find out that the treatment is unneccesary. Really...this whole thing is terrifying. I know it could be worse but...it could be better.

Pap smears usually only detect precancerous strains of HPV. You should get a second opinion. And, as for what the Aldara cream is doing to you, it works extremely well for me, different people react differently to medications. You will need to look into different treatment options.

I was diagnosed with genital warts today according to a OB/GYN. I''m terrified. After close inspection of myself, I truly believe I was misdiagnosed. I'm relieved to hear that other people are going through this. I have an appointment with a different doctor tomorrow.

Go and get retested but go to a different doctor and dont let him/her know about whats going on. Just go in like any person in for a pap test.
