Question:

Ok. I just had a pap smear that came back abnormal. This is the first time that''s happened. When I went in to my doctor today, he took a biopsy, etc. He then talked to me about the possibility that I have HPV. I am assuming that he means HPV of my cervix. My question is this...If I do have HPV of the cervix, does that mean gential warts or just a carrier strain of HPV. And whatever the case, will my fiance contract genital warts from me??

From what iv''e read, there are hundreds of strands of hpv. Statistics show that by a womens third sexual encounter she may have been exposed to hpv. There is a new shot out for hpv's top four strands that may be harmful to women. Ask your physicain about it and look it up online. It will not cure the hpv that you have been exposed to but can protect you from others harmful types. Now, genital warts can take years to appear. Only if you have genital warts then will it transfer to your fiance. But its tricky to know because I have them on the inside of my vagina.I feel no pain and would not have even known if i didn't have a series and yeast infections which lead me to take several trips and do my self examinations with a mirror. It is possible that your fiance may be the one that gave it to you. ask him how many partners he has been exposed to. if he's been with more than three sex parners in a lifetime, than more than likely he is a carrier iof some strand of hpv. Hpv is very common. Abnormal pasmear cause for vistic every six months to keep track. if there are no signs of you having the strand that causes genital warts than your fiance will not get it. He may have already shown signs if that's the case but most men do not.

The HPV strain that causes dysplasia does not cause genital warts. It can be passed to males. I am unsure of the effects this strain has on men, but I am searching to find out. Once I see I will let you know!!

I have the exact same thing and no it does not cause warts but I had abnormal cells close to my cervix area and I had to get a laser treatment to remove it.

well there are two types of HPV and alot of people do not know that. One causes warts that are visible and on the outside. the other can cause cervical cancer and has no symptoms. It sounds like you have the one that can cause cervical cancer because warts do not cause an abnormal pap smear. if you have the one that causes cancer and catch it early because it can be treated.you can not have both types of HPV. good luck.

Thankyou so much for you question. My Boyfriend of 5 years has them and when I had my very frist pap smear it came back abnormal. I thought it was the end of my world (seeing that I have only been with the one person all my life). We are now married and have a 2yr old child now and are trying for number 2.

When we where trying for our 1st child was the first time I had had a pap smear (I thought I would do the right thing and make sure things where ok with me). But when it came back abnormal I was real worried. They did some more tests and took the abnormal cells away. Then I had a real heavy period after that. After my heavy period I was pregnant. When I went back to the doc for my 6 week check-up (after the birth) I had a pap smear and it came back clear.
It''s been 3mths now and I'm still not pregnant. So I have been thinking that maybe the abnormal cells have come back. I'm not due for my pap smear until the end of the year. But seeing that we are trying for our 2nd I'm going to have my pap smear done now. I just hope that it comes back clear and it's just my body telling me that I'm not ready for a new baby right now and nothing bad is going on with my cervix.

Please feel free to ask any questions about my answer. Or if you are in the same boat as me. It would be great to hear if anyone else is like me.

i had the exact same experience which is why I was looking to see if i was the only one. i was so scared when my pap was abnormal and everything was taken, but after reading your question and the answer i feel better. my doctor said that there are 100 types of hpv and the one that i have caused mild dysplasia and it doesn''t carry the wart virus because it is a different type.

here''s the crappy thing about me. I have genital warts, and i get abnormal paps. my doctor says that many things can cause the abnormal paps. she told me that you can have warts on your cervix, and that would cause an abnormal pap. she told me that a yeast infection can cause an abnormal pap, or any other std that you have.

people say that you can't have high and low risk strands at the same time, but you actually can. there is nothing that stops a person from contracting multiple strands, and having one type doesn't make you immune to other types.

i would suggest getting tested to find out what specific strand(s) you have and whether it is low/high risk.

be sure to ask a lot of questions. sometimes you'll have an abnormal pap smear, and it won't have anything to do with hpv. before you get too worried, try to find out as much as you can about your results.
