Yes, the biopsy is to test for HPV and whether or not the sample is cancerous.

Your doctor can likely tell just by looking at the biopsy or another area around it.

Well, doctors are usually pretty correct when they DO diagnose HPV. So I would say you do have it. However, the biopsy will test to see whether you have high-risk or low-risk. There's no test for the virus itself if you have no symptoms. But if you have symptoms (and you do), then they can test it.
