is it possible to have HPV but not show it on a pap smear?

i was just diagnosed on tuesday. i am married, have been w/my husband for over 4 years, i've never had any symptoms and neither has he. my last pap smear came back abnormal and that's when i learned i had HPV. i've had several paps in the past 8 years or so and they always came back normal. is it possible that I contracted the HPV several years ago and it just never showed up in the paps? i am really confused by all of this...

yes that is possible but he could have
also given it to you. 3 out of 4 people
have HPV , most of which show no
symtoms. people can have the virus for
years before a break out occurs or they
may never have one.

also, there is no test for men unless
they have a wart. so really there is no
way to know when or how you got it from
(unless you were a virgin).

I am not sure if I have genital warts.
I ahve a pap coming up and I have just
seen little whit bumps that feel
sensitive. I havne't been with anyone
since my ex... and he was clean (I
think)... but can you get these
without any previous signs on your
pap? Also, I don't mean to be graphic
but what should I be looking for?
Thanks anyone for any info!!

Read HPV 101. It explains why your
test results can be negative when you
actually are infected with HPV.

It is very possible for your pap to
come out normal and you have HPV. You
should get another one to make sure.
But mostlikely if the doctor told you
that you have it, YOU HAVE IT. I wish
you the best of luck.
