Well being that this article is over a year old I hope they would have made some more progress by now. But if you look at all the hoops that the FDA will make Merck jump through before they can release it, I wouldn't be suprised if it was another 3-5 years out.

I am a little iffy on that article. Sounds good, but the main focus is on hpv 16, although it said that a vaccine that includes other strains is in the works. Not to sound negative, but even if this were available, and if I didn't have this virus, if someone told me they had hpv, i do not think i would sleep with them. there are just too many strains, and there is too much still not known about this yet.

My understanding is that Merck will try to get the vaccine out ASAP because they lose the patent on their other lucrative meds soon. Also, they want to add as many strains as possible. To get latest news, go to google news and search for "hpv".

Two articles up-better join a convent because 80% of the sexually active population ages 15-35 have one strain or another.

For any Aussies on here: CSL in Australia has just been granted access to the Merck patented sequence from the HPV 16 virus that is being used in vaccine research overseas and will be studied in conjunction with the University of Queensland. They are hoping this will also pave the way for a multi-valent vaccine for other strains of HPV. :)

That's great -- but I wonder how it affects Merck's IP rights? If Merck doesn't get to protect its investment, then it will have no incentive to develop the vaccine. Or, maybe it's better for the sequence to be out in the public domain in the long run?

I think it will be a joint effort. CSL will share in any profits made obviously, but at the same time, they are contributing to the research so all the better I say! Two heads are better than one :) I don't think either company is entirely profit-based when it comes to developing vaccines etc. CSL actually distrubutes many blood and plasma products for free to laboratories as they are derived from voluntary blood donations at the blood bank :)

attention bunny
Will the HPV Vaccination be helpful for those that would like to protect themselves if they are in a relationship with someone who already has HPV.

I believe so. From what I have gathered, one of the first vaccines being used in trials is that of a preventative nature, in that it can be given to someone to prevent them acquiring hpv
