if you had an abnormal pap it means you have the kind of hpv that is cervical... you won't get warts from it because its a whole different strain of the virus. i would suggest getting checked out with regular gyno visits. as far as not having sex... you can but just remember to be safe and use a condom so that you will reduce your risk of getting something worse!! you should feel lucky that it was hpv instead of hIv!!

Most people (about 75% to 95%) will get HPV at some point in their life. 95% of those who get it will never know about it, so yes its very possible (and more likely) that a guy will have HPV and not have any signs.

can it be hpv that gives genital warts? or does he need to have an outbreak to have that strain?

No, you can have the genital wart strain and never get warts. It all has to do with each person's individual immune system. Some people are more prone to warts than others.

first of all, an abnormal pap can mean anything. if it came back ASCUS then it could be caused by an infection, an irritation or hpv. secondly, visible warts CAN show up on the cervix but the hpv that usually causes visible warts is not the kind responsible for cervical cancer. does that make sense? likewise, the kind that causes cervical cancer (high risk strains) can also be located on your labia, but you cant see it b/c it makes microcellular changes.

cont fr above the reason they can detect high risk strains on your cervix is b/c they do a smear. unfortunately, there is no "smear" for outside the cervix so the high risk strain could also be there. there is no set "cervical strain" and GW strain, meaning there is no strain that only stays on the inside and there is no strain that only stays on the outside. you could have a low risk strain, the kind that produce GW inside on your cervix

no reason to die over this. A vaccine is coming out in a year that will pretty much fix this for everyone out there. Also the way it stands now, almost everyone gets this, and it usually goes away in 2 years. Nothing to get worked up over. www.hpvforum.com
